About Us

Our Regulated Advisors

John Shanahan and Clare Birnie started Gervase Consulting realising that there was a need for insolvency advisors to specialise solely on individuals, and small to medium sized businesses without the large overheads of national and international firms that focus on large administrations.

John and Clare also saw a need for regulated advisers to assist individuals, small businesses and organisations in financial stress dealing with unmanageable debt to avoid extreme financial stress and reduce unnecessary business failure.

Our aim is to provide a personal, efficient, cost effective service where your client deals directly with our team as we work through solutions to their current financial position.

Just like you make an appointment to your taxation accountant for your taxation needs, Gervase Consulting is your specialist advisor for dealing with matters of financial stress, including restructuring and insolvency. We have the specialist knowledge and expertise to give you up to date, accurate and meaningful advice.

Importance of the right qualified advisor

It is important to note that not all advisors are qualified or regulated. As specialists in financial stress, restructuring and insolvency, both John and Clare are regulated, qualified and hold memberships in the following organisations:

  •  CPA AUSTRALIA
  • ARITA (Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association)
  • ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission)
  • AFSA (Australian Financial Security Authority)
  •  AIIP (Association of Independent Insolvency Practitioners)

We recommend that when you are considering restructuring or insolvency advisers for you or your clients that you ensure that they hold the necessary credentials to provide restructuring and insolvency advice.

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) has developed the below video for consumers about the importance of obtaining bankruptcy and debt management advice from reputable sources.

Risks in using unregulated advisors

Further, in response to a need for more regulation and oversight of the industry, both ASIC and the ATO are taking steps to look into the advice given by unregulated “pre-insolvency advisors” and referrals to them. Any advice to asset strip, destroy or modify records or take steps to hamper future investigations, may be constituted as illegal activities or facilitating phoenix activities, which can have implications for the individual, advisor and referrer.

Gervase Consulting as a qualified, regulated specialist takes into consideration all stakeholders (individuals, directors, employees and creditors) to assist in providing the best course of action. We also have access to other professionals that can assist with the burden of restructure, which may include new finance arrangements or a new direction.
